The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has recommended accommodating Indian students from Ukraine in medical schools in the country as a one-time measure and not to consider it for an increase in annual intake capacity. IMA requested the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

More than 1800 Indians were enrolled in medical universities in Ukraine. The letter written to the Prime minister stated that accommodating Indian medical students from Ukraine would need validation of certification by competent academic authorities of medical schools they were at in Ukraine. On completing the medical course, they will be as good as Indian medical graduates and not considered foreign medical graduates. The doctors requested to consider the proposal on humanitarian grounds.

Dr Jayesh Lele, secretary-general of IMA, told that they were requesting the government and NMC to accommodate the students in Indian medical colleges, as it was uncertain how long it would take Ukraine to come back to restore normalcy. Students who have completed more than 2 years would lose time and money and would suffer from mental agony. Hence, the government could decide on a special framework to absorb them.

IMA also plans to meet the union health minister with the request. Maharashtra University of Health Sciences too has collected information from students in Maharashtra who returned from Ukraine and has sought clarity from NMC on the possibility of accommodating these students in-state colleges.
